Biography

New York born soprano, Maria Callas, made fer first studio recording in Italy in 1949 when she was only 25 years old. Maria Callas was a phenomenon. She was able to learn complete operatic roles in a very short time as well as sing widely varying types of role, from Wagner to Bellini. She was a great actress.

Above all Maria Callas had an extraordainary and unmistakable voice with a much wider range than most other sopranos, from very high notes to very low notes and with exceptional vocal agility, especially for trills and chromatic passages.

From her debut opera performance in 1942 in Italy until her last stage performance at Covent Garden in London in July 1965, her last public performances in Japan in November 1974 and until the end of her life, much was written about her. If it was all to be believed she had a very colourful life.
