Pierre-Laurent Aimard wins coveted RPS Award

Warner Classics artist wins 'instrumentalist' category


French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard has been given the Royal Philharmonic Society Award in the Instrumentalist category. The judging panel stated that he had been chosen 'For his adventurous commitment to twentieth century and contemporary music, the breadth of his repertoire from Mozart to the present day and for his brilliant, poetic and subtly-shaded playing'.

The RPS Music Awards are widely recognised as the most prestigious in the field of live classical music. Awards are decided by independent panels consisting of some of the music industry’s most distinguished practitioners. The awards, in 13 categories, honour musicians, composers, writers, broadcasters and inspirational arts organisations for their work in 2004. This year’s ceremony, on 11th May at the Dorchester Hotel in London, was hosted by BBC Radio 3’s Stephanie Hughes, with awards presented by conductor Sir Andrew Davis. The keynote speech was given by theatre director Jude Kelly.

Pierre-Laurent Aimard's latest recording for Warner Classics is a recital disc of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit together with Elliott Carter's Night Fantasies, Diversions and 90+ (2564 62160-2) which will be released in summer 2005. Pierre-Laurent has a busy tour schedule in 2005 which includes a recital of Ligeti's Etudes at the Wigmore Hall on 18th May with the Keller Quartet (www.wigmore-hall.org.uk) and a recital of Ravel and Carter at Aldeburgh Festival on 13th June (www.aldeburgh.co.uk).
