The waltz king with plenty of verve – but no sugar coating! He set out to revolutionize Early Music before turning his very individual attention to 19th- and 20th-century repertoire: Nikolaus Harnoncourt, one of the most important conductors of our time. A special gem in his discography are his interpretations of the music of Johann Strauss the Younger – full of Viennese sparkle and, as Harnoncourt himself puts it, “free of treacle”. From his first disc of Strauss waltzes with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the live album with the Berlin Philharmonic to his marvellous Vienna New Year’s Concert of 2001 and the complete recordings of Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron, all Harnoncourt’s Strauss recordings are released here for the first time in a box set.
