May 2022 will be devoted to celebrating the centenary of the great figure Iannis Xenakis. One of the leading figures of the avant-garde for almost half a century, he expanded the borders of musical creativity thanks to his stunning credentials in mathematics and architecture. Psappha, composed as an homage to Sappho’s poetry, is one of Xenakis’ most popular compositions, and a hit among classical percussionists. It is here performed by Peter Sadlo, who gathered around him some of the best drummers to perform contemporary works by such figures as John Cage or Minoru Miki. Matthias Schmitt’s Ghanaia, inspired by West-African rhythms, is an addictive banger!
