The humble violinist Gioconda de Vito never raised to the fame she deserved despite the unanimous recognition of the greatest musical figures of her time such as Wilhelm Furtwängler, Yehudi Menuhin or Edwin Fischer. Moreover, her career was shortened first by the war, then by her sudden and surprising decision to retire in 1960, feeling she had reached her apex. She formed a noted duet with the great pianist and pedagogue Tito Aprea. They left a few recordings which are beautiful testimonies of their mutual artistic understanding, including this sonata by César Franck, coupled here with Beethoven’s seventh.
