César Franck’s Rédemption is a work 'full of light, whose impetus toward deity rises still further in a harmonious ascent', according to one of his greatest admirers, the writer Octave Mirbeau. It is a hybrid piece somehow between opera, tone poem and oratorio – beautiful and unusual. This version by French Romantic music specialist Michel Plasson features the great mezzo-soprano Béatrice Uria-Monzon and actor Lambert Wilson, who narrates parts of the text omitted by Franck, in the only complete performance available online.
