Exactly four centuries ago, the main musical event of the Venice Carnival was the creation of Monteverdi’s innovative dramatic madrigal Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, an absolute milestone of lyrical art with its stunning word painting and precise stage directions. This premiere version by Nikolaus Harnoncourt is coupled with other pieces from the eighth book of madrigals, and features Kurt Equiluz, Werner Hollweg and Trudeliese Schmitt.
