The pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has done a lot to promote lesser-known piano repertoire from Scandinavia, from underrated pieces of Grieg to works by fellow Norwegians Geirr Tveitt and Harald Saeverud. He also recorded this reference album devoted to the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. Mostly remembered for his symphonic masterpieces, Nielsen also composed extensively for piano. This collection includes various sets of interesting pieces, from lovely miniatures such as the Humoresque-Bagatelles inspired by childhood, to more ambitious compositions like the Chaconne or the Luciferan Suite. It is coupled with a violin sonata performed with Christian Tetzlaff.
