Richard Strauss’ Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, though not initially meant as a ballet, has a very evocative narrative. The Ballets Russes turned the tone poem about the German folkloric character of Till into a ballet, choreographed by Nijinsky and performed only during a 1916 tour in the United States. The work has been added to our splendid Diaghliev boxset (out in March), in this version previously unavailable in digital by Lorin Maazel.
