Adriano Banchieri was an atypical composer, also monk, theoretician, author… His masterpiece is a set of twenty madrigals called Barca di Venezia per Padova, actually a series of amusing sketches involving characters inspired by the commedia dell’arte, during a boat trip between the two Italian cities. An innovative work of a great eloquence, here performed with a lot of wit by the Collegium vocale Köln and the famous Italian actor Gianrico Tedeschi as a narrator.
This recording comes with a short selection of madrigals by Banchieri’s contemporaries Gesualdo and Monteverdi.
