The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, which recently celebrated its centenary, is one of the main English classical institutions outside London. It has recorded extensively with EMI and Erato since the 1970s, under the baton of such distinguished conductors as Louis Frémaux, Sakari Oramo, Vernon Handley and of course the most iconic of its musical directors, Simon Rattle. This collection features a large panorama of British music from the greatest figures to underappreciated composers such as John Foulds, Arthur Sullivan or Malcolm Arnold (here conducting his own works).
