Debussy: Première rhapsodie

Written as a examination piece for clarinet and piano for students of the Paris Conservatoire, Debussy’s Première rhapsodie showcases the clarinet’s lyrical capabilities while also testing the virtuosity of the performer. Debussy was so pleased with the result that he made a brilliant orchestration of the piano part, allowing the piece be performed by a soloist with orchestra. We bring to you a live recording under Tan Dun the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra demonstrates affinity with Debussy’s lush impressionist textures and the virtuosity of its principal clarinet Olivier Patey.
