The Chorale Philippe Caillard, who recorded almost exclusively for Erato during more than twenty years, was a pioneering early music vocal ensemble, one of the most innovative in 60s and 70s’ France. In this recording, newly remastered and made available for the first time since its original LP issue, they perform two masterpieces of Josquin’s catalogue: the late mass “Pange lingua”, one of the most striking examples of paraphrase mass (based on a plainsong melody), and the supreme Miserere, which can be regarded as a crowning achievement of the whole Franco-Flemish school.
