April 8th marks the centenary of tenor Franco Corelli. One of the most influential figures of Italian opera during the 60s, he left his mark on an entire generation of lyrical art lovers thanks to his electric scenic presence, natural charisma and unique tone of voice. Though Corelli remains famous mostly for having portrayed Verdian heroes and sharing top billing with Maria Callas or Birgit Nilsson, he also recorded non-operatic recitals, such as these two volumes of Neapolitan songs conducted by Franco Ferraris. In popular songs such as Torna a Surriento or O sole mio, Corelli’s stunning vocal technique serves a beautiful repertoire dedicated to both classical and non-classical lovers.
