The catalogue of Gabriel Pierné is filled with gems, particularly in the orchestral repertoire in which he could express his colouristic talents. The Paysages franciscains, inspired by texts of poet Johannes Jørgensen about the life of Francis of Assisi, are a splendid set of impressionist pieces, and maybe Pierné’s masterwork. This album by Pierre Dervaux also contains the ballet Images and the “waltz and blues” Viennoise, the only existing recordings of these pieces.
