19th March will mark the 150th birthday of composer Max Reger, who can be regarded as a missing link between Brahms and Schoenberg, the latter having expressed a deep admiration for him. Somehow neglected, Reger is nonetheless a fascinating artist, whose vast catalogue contains numerous gems, particularly in chamber music. His works for clarinet are masterpieces of the repertoire, and his beautiful quintet is a moving homage to Brahms (even including quotes of the elder composer in the third movement). This album of chamber music by the great Sabine Meyer and the Wiener Streichsextett, available for the first time on digital platforms, is brilliant evidence of Reger’s unique personality.
