Arnold Schoenberg was a pivotal figure of 20th-century music who revolutionized compositional techniques with the introduction of sprechgesang and dodecaphonism. Schoenberg was not only a fierce modernist though and considered himself openly as part of the German Romantic heritage, from Beethoven to the Strauss family for whom he had the greatest admiration. His Suite “In the Old Style”, composed as he just settled in the United States after fleeing Nazi Germany, is a witty tonal piece, rarely recorded. As per his hit Transfigured Night, also for string orchestra, it is an unmissable youth post-Wagnerian piece. Both of these works are beautifully performed by Claudio Scimone and his Solisti Veneti.
