Simon Rattle has always been a deep lover of music from the classical era, and particularly Haydn whom he often adds to his concert programs. Nonetheless, he waited for nearly fifteen years after the beginning of his discographic career to record his first album devoted to 18th-century music, with three underrated symphonies by Haydn including No. 60 “Il distratto”. He would later record various symphonies such as the Philosopher, or the late Oxford and Letter V with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He also gave a striking rendition of the English adaptation of The Creation, with famous vocal soloists Arleen Augér, Philip Langridge and David Thomas.
