A gripping masterpiece: Beethoven composed the Missa solemnis was at the height of his creative powers. He described it several times himself as his greatest work, an expression of his intensive examination over several years of how he understood God. Originally planned for the enthronement of his friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria as archbishop in 1820, the Mass was premiered years later – in the concert hall. Its vast dimensions go far beyond any liturgical framework. Today, the Missa solemnis is not only one of the most important compositions by Beethoven, but also the most important Mass setting of the entire 19th century.
