One of the major contributions of Michel Corboz to the history of recording was bringing back the music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The recordings made with the Gulbenkian Orchestra from Lisbon in the 70s brought to light the magnificence and depth of the composer’s sacred music. This one dated from 1972 and consists of three pieces for choir and vocal soloists (a mass, a motet, and a Dies irae) gathered in a service for the dead. It is believed that the music was performed in that order for the funeral of a member from the Guise family.
