In Ciné-clavecin, the amazing harpsichordist Mayako Sone explores the connections between the repertoire of her instrument and soundtracks of classic movies such as Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and its iconic use of Handel’s Sarabande, or Bergman’s Wild Strawberries which highlights the music of Bach.
Among the lesser-known repertoire on this fascinating album, we can quote the patriotic polonaise Farewell to the Fatherland by Ogiński, to whom the Polish national anthem is sometimes attributed, and which illustrates Wajda’s captivating Ashes and Diamonds. Also to be noted the transcription by Sone herself of the simple yet deeply moving theme of Zurlini’s Girl with a Suitcase, with the radiant presence of Claudia Cardinale.
