“I have placed death before life,” wrote Charles Gounod, “… because in the order of eternal things, death precedes life.” Mors et vita is an epic oratorio filled with operatic drama and its spirit and appeal are exemplified in the celebrated ‘Judex’, a soaring, sweeping chorus. Michel Plasson, as ever a master of French Romantic music, is joined by a splendid quartet of soloists, with Barbara Hendricks illuminating the soprano line and José van Dam taking command of the baritone’s pronouncements.
