A discreet but very influential figure of German modernism, Boris Blacher (whose music was regarded as “degenerate” by the Nazis) found a very original form of expression, atonal but still refined and intelligible. He was a highly esteemed pedagogue, and notably taught Aribert Reimann, who passed away recently. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau paid homage to Blacher in some of his recordings devoted to contemporary music, along with Reimann or pianist-composer Hermann Reutter.
