Bridging Romanticism and Modernism, the composers of the Second Viennese School – Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern – ushered in a new musical era. Their works, ranging from the intimate to the epic, were ideally suited to the talents and intellect of Giuseppe Sinopoli. A conductor and composer whose studies also embraced medicine, psychology and archaeology, he took a special interest in the music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His interpretations, founded in both scrupulous analysis and an epicurean appreciation of sonorities, were often revelatory.
