At last available in digital, here is a very interesting document of Sir Michael Tippett - a composer occupying a central place in English modern music - performing his own compositions. This album, by a composer at the twilight of his career, sheds a light on various Tippett’s creative periods, from the early vigorous Double Concerto to the Corelli Fantasia, an homage to both the Italian concerto grosso and the string works of his role models Elgar and Vaughan Williams. The Songs for Dov are a very original set of melodies for tenor after arias from the opera The Knot Garden, and one of the very rare classical works to include an electric guitar in its instrumentation!
