The renewal of French chamber music after decades of decrepitude is among the major musical contributions of César Franck. Apart from the supreme piano quintet, two works are emblematic of this renaissance: the late string quartet and the violin sonata. The latter is perhaps his most popular work, played here by Augustin Dumay and Jean-Philippe Collard. It is coupled with Debussy’s masterpiece sonata as well as two lesser-known youthful works for violin and piano, and the beautiful Andantino quietoso, a duet after arias from an opera by Dalayrac.
