Ludwig Senfl, Stephan Mahu
Until the late 16th-century and the emergence of figures like Hassler and Praetorius, Germany looked like the musical poor cousin of Western Europe, impervious to the innovations from Italy, Flanders or France. Nonetheless, a very rich and underrated secular repertoire existed, heir of the Meistersinger tradition, and called the Tenorlied. Most works of this genre are unattributed, but a few names like Ludwig Senfl or Stephan Mahu have remained. The Studio der frühen Musik vividly revives this art in a pioneering album, featuring Nigel Rogers.
