As part of our John Eliot Gardiner retrospective, here is an off-the-beaten-track recording from 1989. Temporarily stepping away from Baroque music and French romanticism, Gardiner teamed up with Steven Isserlis to record highlights from the Russian romantic concertante repertoire. It includes Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations alongside lesser-known pieces such as Glazunov’s Mélodie and Spanish Serenade and the extremely rare Scherzando and Cantabile by César Cui.
