Palestrina and Lasso were the two greatest figures of the 16th-century’s second half, one succeeding to the other as maestro di cappella of Saint John Lateran in Rome. This album by the collegiate choir of Saint John highlights the sacred music of these two giants, Palestrina’s mass after his own motet Veni sponsa Christi and Lasso’s mass after the Italian song Bell’ Amfitrit’ altera. This album also features another milestone score of the Roman school, this time by Baroque composer Gregorio Allegri: the ethereal Miserere, one of the most famous sacred pages of Western music.
