In this early album, the second she recorded for EMI, Sabine Meyer pays homage to the figure of Heinrich Baermann, the most talented clarinetist of his generation in the early 19th-century. The greatest composers dedicated him works for clarinet, such as Weber’s famous quintet, here performed in a version with string orchestra. Mendelssohn himself, a close friend of Baermann, composed two pieces for clarinet, basset horn and orchestra for him and his son. They are here performed by Sabine Meyer and her brother Wolfgang. The last piece of the album is a lovely Adagio for clarinet and strings, long thought to be Wagner’s, but actually composed by Baermann himself.
