German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich, Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year in 2018, has made a revelatory coupling of the violin concertos of Johannes Brahms and György Ligeti to follow his album of Paganini’s 24 Caprices.
“It is my goal to constantly discover new important works and re-examine old ones,” says Augustin Hadelich, “Many of my programmes focus on how compositions from different eras inform each other when placed side by side. Despite obvious differences in temperament and compositional style, the Romantic Brahms and the recovering avant-gardist Ligeti have a lot in common. When heard in succession, the similarities and stark contrasts make each work shine in a way that it wouldn’t without the other. I am delighted to play again with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Miguel Harth-Bedoya after our previous work together on the Mendelssohn and Bartók concertos."
