A fierce advocate of Mendelssohn’s music (he recorded the complete symphonies and piano concertos with the Gewandhausorchester in the late 1980s), Kurt Masur recorded a landmark version of his iconic incidental music A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It is one of the very rare complete versions sung in German, including the entire music with the melodrama and excerpts of the Shakespeare play, narrated by the famous actor Freidhelm Eberle (a long-time teacher at the Mendelssohn University for music and theatre in Leipzig).
