George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber

Here is a collection of America’s finest tunes from the early 20th-century, conducted by the late Richard Hickox with the City of London Sinfonia. Two of the most famous works of Aaron Copland are featured on this album: the orchestral suite of Appalachian Spring, and Quiet City, with its haunting trumpet part. It also includes (for the first time in digital), Barber’s deeply moving lyrical rhapsody Knoxville: Summer of 1915, evoking a nostalgia of childhood like no other composition, and his famous Adagio. As a grand finale, enjoy Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, in Ferde Grofé’s arrangement… but not the one we’re used to hearing! It is here performed in its version for jazz band, as intended for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, featuring Wayne Marshall at the piano.
