The Dutch composer and concert pianist Henriëtte Bosmans composed her Sonata for Violin and Piano over the course of several months in 1918. Remaining unpublished until 2021 this expressive, late romantic work was performed very rarely after its 1918 premiere and this 2022 studio recording is only the second recording of the piece. The third movement is selected as focus track. Veering between melancholy and hopefulness it highlights both the lyrical quality and rich sonority of the Sonata.
For Bosmans, her Violin Sonata marked the beginning of a series of chamber music compositions, of which the Piano Trio is scheduled for recording this winter. This EP will be part of an all Bosmans album (RCO 23001, due for release 2024), also featuring the Concertstuk for Violin and Orchestra and the Piano Trio, where Vesko Eschkenazy and Jeroen Bal are joined by the orchestra’s principal cellist Gregor Horsch and conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
