Ives’ Robert Browning Overture was meant as part of a cycle of works dedicated to great men of literature, but it is the only one that has survived. Dedicated to one of the greatest Victorian poets and playwrights of whom Ives was a great admirer, the work was completed by the composer’s closest friend, the avant-garde composer Henry Cowell. This powerful piece is one of the major symphonic pieces of Ives’ catalogue and is here performed by specialist Ingo Metzmacher.
