Harrison Birtwistle, one of the leading British avant-garde composers since the late 50s, passed away on April 18th. Pierre Boulez made the only existing recording of his masterpiece …agm… whose strange name refers to the poetry fragments of Sappho found in the Fayoum, here sung in an adapted English version. Birtwistle once described this piece as the one he was most proud of. This album comes with two other milestone contemporary works by Gérard Grisey and György Kurtág (the later featuring Adrienne Csengery).
