Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

Our Johanna Martzy retrospective is complete with this 1954 recording of violin concertos by Mozart and Mendelssohn. The producer Walter Legge wanted to unite two rising stars of classical music, convincing Johanna Martzy to leave Deutsche Grammophon and team up with Wolfgang Sawallisch, one of the most sought-after young German conductors. The recording sessions had a reputation of being boisterous, with the pair having strongly contrasting temperaments, and the result remained unpublished for more than forty years. It is nonetheless a must-know, revealing the undisputable talent of the two musicians.
