In November 2020, right after the announcement of a second shutdown in Germany due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Carlos Cipa decided to seize the moment to record in a closed venue, one in which he had always thought of filming and recording a session: the ‘Alte Kongresshalle’ in the city centre of Munich, a retro-futuristic building from the 1950s. He visited the hall with one of his long-time collaborators, director Stef Zins, and instantly felt it was the perfect atmosphere – so they set a date. In late November, they brought in a wonderful grand piano built by ‘Steingräber & Söhne’, a boutique piano manufacturer from Bayreuth, which served as the perfect instrument for the session, letting the composer and pianist transform four of his most notable upright pieces and uncover their most brilliant and pianistic aspects.
