Edmund Rubbra is not the most celebrated British composer, and probably quite unknown outside his native country, but his beautiful cycle of symphonies is a major contribution to 20th-century English orchestral music and an evidence of Rubbra’s singular personality. The fifth symphony, where one can sense the influence of German post-romanticism, has remained his most popular work. Early music was a constant source of inspiration for Rubbra: this recording is coupled with one of the very rare recordings of an Improvisation after works by Renaissance composer Giles Farnaby.
