Glorious brass: Even as far back as the Baroque, trumpets were extremely popular. Telemann devoted three exquisitely crafted concertos to the trumpet and Purcell’s trumpet sonatas personify the musical pomp and splendour of their age with their radiant, majestic tone. Leopold Mozart’s concerto is a favourite early classical work for the instrument and Haydn’s E-flat major concerto, the first masterpiece for keyed trumpet, has never lost its popularity.
