Aida, the eponymous role of the Verdian masterpiece, is a complex character: slave despite her royal lineage, torn between her impossible love to her enemy soldier and her fidelity to her captive father… To be embodied convincingly, it requires all the talent of high-ranking vocal artists, especially since it is very demanding (the Nile aria that opens the third act, the final scene to be sung fil di voce…). Aida was a signature role of la Divina, who performed it almost thirty times on stage, and left a splendid legacy on disc with this performance featuring Fedora Barbieri and Richard Tucker.
