The String Quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor is one of Beethoven's Late Quartets and was his personal favourite. It consists of seven movements and the composer demanded that it be played attacca - without a pause between the movements. The film heavily stresses this, the attaca becoming a key element. Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter plays the role of the singer Miriam. The prestigious magazine Gramophone mocked up a magazine cover for the film, which you can find here.
The Alban Berg Quartet recorded Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in 1984. You can find this great recording here.
