The opening Verbier concert is always one of the most anticipated events of the festival season, and this year is no exception. All eyes and ears will be on American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato at the Verbier Festival tonight, as she marks the beginning of a summer of sublime music-making with Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été. Her partners are the Verbier Festival Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
The opening concert can be viewed on medici.tv. Other esteemed performers making music in the Swiss mountains this year include soprano Angela Gheorghiu, cellists Mischa Maisky, Gautier Capuçon and the 21-year-old Edgar Moreau; violinist Renaud Capuoçon, violist David Aaron Carpenter, pianists Grigory Sokolov, Menahem Pressler and Beatrice Rana, conductors Charles Dutoit and Zubin Mehta... And even the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club.
The Verbier Festival runs from 17 July until 2 August.
The official album Verbier Festival: The Best of 2014 is available this month.
