Ten years ago, the great tenor Peter Schreier took his stage farewell. Eighty years ago he was born in Meissen, Saxony.
He began his musical life as a choirboy in the renowned Dresdener Kreuzchor, going on to become one of the greatest lyric tenors in the German-speaking world – with a repertoire ranging from Mozart and Wagner opera roles to oratorio and Lied. His recorded legacy is cherished today for his insightful musicianship and the dramatic intensity of his voice.
For the dapper German gentleman's birthday, Warner Classics has reissued Schreier's remarkable Teldec recording of Schumann's Dichterliebe with pianist Christoph Eschenbach.
