Ailyn Peréz & Stephen Costello to sing in Richard Tucker Day festivities
Stephen Costello and Ailyn Peréz will perform in a free concert on August 28 as part of the third annual Richard Tucker Day in New York City, a day-long celebration in the tenor’s home city, honouring him on what would be his 101st birthday.
The concert, which will take place at the Society for Ethical Culture on Manhattan’s Upper West Side at 7pm, is one of many events organised throughout the day by the Richard Tucker Music Foundation. All of the concert’s performers are winners of the Foundation’s awards and grants, and will include mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and soprano Erin Morley in addition to the husband-and-wife team.
Other festivities throughout the day include a free outdoor lunchtime opera concert in Manhattan’s Financial District and the performance of the American national anthem at the New York Mets’ evening game by tenor Dimitri Pittas, a past winner of two Tucker grants.
Peréz and Costello are the only married couple to have both won Richard Tucker Awards; Costello collected his in 2009, and Peréz in 2012. Their recent album Love Duets, released on Warner Classics in June 2014, is dedicated to Tucker’s memory.
The great American tenor's Álvaro can be heard opposite Maria Callas’s Leonora in their 1954 recording of Verdi’s La Forza Del Destino, which will be re-released as part of the highly anticipated Maria Callas Remastered Edition boxed set in September.
