As both a pianist and composer, Fazıl Say is exceptionally diverse in his interests – his recent Warner Classics releases have ranged from Mozart sonatas to his own, eclectic evocation of four cities in Turkey. Yet, surprisingly, the music of Chopin – an ‘essential’ composer for the piano – is new to his extensive discography. “I didn’t record Chopin for so many years and now, for the first time, I have made a Chopin album,” comments Say, “because I wanted to have a very specific idea about me playing Chopin … The Nocturnes are especially beautiful, extremely poetic little night pieces that always convey a narrative. Of course, they are Chopin’s most famous works.”
