Like restless waves gushing around a firm, steady base, Surges is a musical body in constant motion. Built around a scarcely changing repetition of a c-f fourth interval, the piece's melody is driven by a progression of chords that engulf it, flow over or dive under it – at times harmoniously, at times dissonantly. The moody tide ebbs and swells, turning the surges into mere faint ripples, until the chords gradually cascade into tranquil depths.
Originally recorded on a brittle 1975 Broadwood Grand, the adaptation to Cipa’s studio piano takes the tempo down quite a notch and opens a new perspective to the piece resulting in a more meditative and contemplating mood.
